Opening of the 3rd Session of the 6th Parliament of the Republic of Namibia

On 09 February 2016, President Dr Hage Geingob official opened the Third Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Republic of Namibia. During the occasion he reminded Parliamentarians, as elected representatives of the people, that the responsibility is to ensure to make use of democratic platforms to actualize the aspirations of the electorate.

He said, as the Legislature, they have a key role to play in the country's development efforts. They represent the platform of inclusive political dialogue and national debate and are, therefore, crucial in spearheading Namibia's developmental agenda.

STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR HAGE G. GEINGOB, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA AT THE OPENING OF THE 2016 LEGAL YEAR SUPREME COURT OF NAMIBIA, FEBRUARY 4, 2016, WINDHOEK

President Geingob: "Justice and law are the cornerstones of any functioning democracy that strives as stated in the preamble of the Namibian Constitution (and I quote) "to achieve national reconciliation and to foster peace, unity and a common loyalty to a single state and this we do through securing to all our citizens justice, liberty, equality and fraternity."

"The fact that our Judiciary contributes significantly to our efforts to build a successful nation has never been lost on the Government. On many occasions in the past, my predecessors, Comrades Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma and Dr Hifikipunye Pohamba, affirmed the Government's steadfast commitment to the promotion of an efficient and effective administration of justice. They stated the fact that commitment to justice remained the cornerstone of the policy of our Government.

Today, I am here to continue the legacy of these great leaders - the legacy of peace and justice. A legacy in which we, the citizens of the independent Namibia, have chosen Constitutional democratic rule over autocracy and the rule of law over arbitrary use of governmental power. We have chosen respect for basic human rights over brutality and denial of basic freedoms." (...)

STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR HAGE G. GEINGOB, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF NAMIBIA ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST CABINET MEETING OF 2016

Dr. Hage Geingob writes the following introduction on his facebook page: "As I have declared 2016 as the Year of Implementation, I reminded Cabinet that our success as a Government depends on our ability to work in unison as one team with a common purpose; and to desist from developing silo mentalities, where we become holed up in our individual portfolios. We need to think as one and realise that the success in administering and executing the functions of the Government depends very much on team effort.

The philosophy of the Harambee Plan for Prosperity must penetrate all spheres and sectors of our society. Ministers must note that they are leaders, and must live and act the "Harambee way". The same goes for Permanent Secretaries and for all leaders in the Government sector.

Our Harambee Plan for Prosperity is applicable not only for the Government sector, but equally applies to the private sector, in our schools and other institutions of training and education and everywhere in society.

My statement is therefore copied below for your information and deliberation:

ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIRST CABINET MEETING OF 2016, FEBRUARY 2, 2016, WINDHOEK

I would like to welcome you all to the first Cabinet meeting of 2016, the Year of Implementation.

I trust that all of you had a well-deserved rest. I hope that we have all returned from our vacation with renewed vigour and a strong sense of purpose, ready to work hard in this New Year, as the challenges are many.

As all of you are aware, last year significant time was devoted to developing a shared Vision that will present the overarching framework for conducting our business going forward. I would like to thank all of you for contributing towards the Vision building process, in your daily engagements with the Namibian people.

There is no doubt – and we should be proud of it – that we have indeed succeeded in developing a shared Vision, not only as Cabinet or Government, but as a Nation at large. Vision building is not minor accomplishment, amidst an environment of high expectation, but we have succeeded. Today, the entire Nation, including those in the diaspora, has been re-energized and has rallied behind our common Vision. Across the length and width of our Republic, the Namibian people have embraced, rallied behind and internalized concepts such as the Namibian House, no one should feel left out and Harambee. Welcoming remarks during the Opening Ceremony of the Consultative Summit of the African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State on the Reform of the United National Security Council (UNSC)

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Namibia and Windhoek in particular.

I would like to take this opportunity to express our great gratitude to Your Excellency Dr. Koroma, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, for your effective stewardship of our Committee. The Common Position is gaining traction at the United Nations, thanks to your excellent leadership. I also thank our Permanent Representatives to the United Nations and the African Union, for the excellent work that they continue to carry out in ongoing efforts to canvass support for our common position.

Please allow me, Your Excellency, to congratulate Sierra Leone and all the affected countries for being declared Ebola free.

Your Excellencies, The present position of the Security Council does not reflect the broader principle of equitable geographical representation. This is neither representative nor democratic. It is imperative that the Security Council be enlarged to reflect the present day geo-political realities. This will enhance its democratic credentials and give legitimacy to its work.

In this context, Namibia reiterates the call of the Africa Union for the comprehensive reform of the Security Council, to make it more democratic, transparent and ipso facto serve humanity better.
