STATEMENT ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL SITUATION IN ZIMBABWE

23561572 1138001479635873 538937252849627633 nThe Government of Namibia has been following the unfolding developments in Zimbabwe with concern, and associate itself with the Statement issued on behalf of SADC.

As neighbours, Member States of SADC and AU, Namibia and Zimbabwe share a common destiny and common aspirations for peace, economic prosperity and democracy for our countries and people. Namibia is concerned that the present situation in Zimbabwe creates uncertainty that is not conducive to peace, stability and consolidation of democracy in Zimbabwe and the region as a whole.

Namibia notes that the Zimbabwe Defence Force has assured the Zimbabwe public and the international community at large that they have not overthrown the Government of Zimbabwe and that they have no intention to take over the governance of the country.

Namibia further notes that the situation in the country remains relatively calm. It is the expectation of the Government of Namibia that democratic institutions in Zimbabwe will continue to carry out their constitutional functions. Namibia urges all the parties concerned to scrupulously adhere to the relevant provisions of the SADC Treaty on Governance and the African Union Constitutive Act. Namibia will continue to follow closely the situation in Zimbabwe.

Cybercrime Parliament UNAMSpeaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Prof. Peter Katjavivi has urged fellow Parliamentarians to expedite the process of enacting a law dealing with cybercrime as Namibia continues to rapidly embrace information and communication technology.

Katjavivi was speaking when he officially opened a one day Cyber Security Conference for Members of Parliament in Windhoek today (06/11/17).

The conference is an initiative of Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) in collaboration with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Communication Technology and Innovation.

The gathering that has brought together lawmakers and industry experts is intended to capacitate lawmakers on the technical subject of cyberspace, a global trend that not only comes with unlimited opportunities but also presents threats such as cybercrimes. According to Katjavivi, Namibia is not an exception. “Our namibian cyberspace is highly vulnerable to cyber threats and attacks. These types of cybercrimes can range from financial fraud, cyberbullying, hacking and child pornography among many others”, noted Katjavivi.

Chairperson of the Parliamentary standing committee on ICT and Innovation, Hon. Faustina Caley added that the conference was taking place at an opportune time when Parliament is expected to debate the electronic transaction and Cybercrime bill that is in the process of being finalized.

The bill will also target online child pornography among other cybercrimes.

In keeping with its ongoing commitment towards improving the livelihood of the Namibian people as well as our declaration of an all-out war on poverty, in 2015, the Government launched the Massive Urban Land Servicing Project (MULSP), to expedite our ongoing efforts in terms of servicing and delivery of residential land and affordable housing in urban areas.

As you may recall, in 2015 I visited sites in Windhoek, Oshakati and Walvis Bay, accompanied by Ministers Shaningwa and Schlettwein, for the purpose of identification of sites to kick start the implementation of the Massive Urban Land Servicing Project. Following our visits, technical officials then proceeded to craft the details of the project sites and scope. This process resulted in the selection of two sites in Walvis Bay, namely Extensions 5, 6 & 7 Kuisebmund and Extension 7 for the Project. Please, click here to read more....

(...)

In the interest of time, please allow me to respect the protocol that was established by the Director of Ceremonies.

On behalf of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, which I have the distinct honor and privilege to head, I wish to welcome His Excellency Comrade President, former President and all distinguished participants to this historic event, the launch of the Dr. Theo - Ben Gurirab Lecture Series.

The question might be asked, why the Lecture Series? In answering, our President, Namibia's Chief Diplomat will elaborate further on that. Let me however mention that, following the Foreign Policy Review Conference held from 25 - 29 July 2016, and taking into account the over subscription of all the workshops held then, the overarching interest of the general public, especially the youth and academia in global events and how they impact on our domestic policies, the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation decided to introduce Lecture Series, in order to inform and engage the public about contemporary global events.

The Lecture Series will encourage the population to be involved in shaping Policy on International Relations (Foreign Policy), in relation to Namibia’s development agenda as outlined in our Constitution, Vision 2030 and its NDPs, the SWAPO Party Election Manifesto, the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP), complemented by the AU Africa Agenda 2063, and the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. These Lecture Series will provide an opportunity to reflect on how best we can continue to effectively serve the interests of the Namibian people, contributing to their security, prosperity and wellbeing, as well as the promotion of the country’s values, through its active international engagements.

Topics to be discussed during the Lecture Series will be based on contemporary global events. Presenters will be drawn from Government including Senior Management in MIRCO, the Namibia Association of Former Ambassadors (NAFA), various sectors of society such as academia, civil society, Parliament, private Sector, youth representatives, Diplomatic corps, parastatals etc., and were necessary, international experts. The Lecture Series will be held on a quarterly basis, and the venues for the Series will rotate among the 14 Regions to ensure that no one should feel left out.
