Independence Day 34th

Speech by His Excellency Dr Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia, on the Occasion of the #34thIndependenceDay Anniversary

A People United for Prosperity

Katima Mulilo Stadium, Zambezi Region, 21 March 2024

Fellow Namibians,

1. True independence is fundamental to the success and credibility of any nation. It is only through independence that people can obtain their dignity and full humanity.

2. That being said, it gives me great honour to join you today in #KatimaMulilo, the Zambezi Region on this momentous occasion, as we celebrate the 34th Independence Day Anniversary of the Republic of #Namibia, in the Year of Expectations and Elections, and also a year of new beginnings.

3. Namibia’s independence on March 21, 1990, was made possible through the brave exploits of the sons and daughters of our soil, including many from the Zambezi region such as the late Brendan Kangongolo Simbwaye, SWAPO Vice President and the late Greenwell Simasiku Matongo, PLAN Commissar, who traversed the perilous passage to freedom, crossing many rivers of blood along the way.

4. Their unwavering determination and laudable gallantry, culminated in the attainment of the freedom, peace, stability and unity that all citizens of the Namibian House enjoy today.

5. However, this year’s celebrations are bittersweet due to the fact that though we celebrate, we are still sad having recently emerged from a period of mourning following the passing of our 3rd President, His Excellency Dr. Hage Gottfried Geingob, on February 4, and subsequent burial on February 25, 2024.

6. In him, our country lost a wise nation builder and a Peoples President who greatly loved the people of Namibia. For this reason, on our independence anniversary, we also celebrate the legacy of President Geingob, an extra-ordinary revolutionary icon, whose remarkable lifelong service and devotion to Namibia has left an enduring imprint in the hearts and minds of our citizens as well as friends and acquaintances all over the world.

State of the Nation Address (SONA)

SONA Parliament

State of the Nation Address by His Excellency Dr Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia

Parliament, Windhoek, 14 March 2024

Honourable Speaker,
Honourable Chairperson,
Fellow Namibians,

1. I am standing before you today, to deliver this SONA, in this most unusual of years. Just over two weeks ago, I undertook one of the most agonizing tasks when I had to pay tribute to and bid farewell to my dear Comrade and Brother, the third President of Namibia, His Excellency Dr Hage Gottfried Geingob, who sadly left us on the 4th of February 2024.

2. President Geingob’s burial on the 25th of February 2024, concluded a harrowing stretch of days in which we experienced myriads of emotions. At the same time, while dealing with the passing of our President, I was also overcome by a sense of responsibility. Although my swearing-in as the President of the Republic of Namibia came against the backdrop of pain and grief, I was aware that the Namibian nation needed to move forward and someone would have to lead that way forward. In remembrance and honour of our departed 3rd President of the Republic of Namibia, may I call on the honourable House to rise and observe a final minute of silence.

Honourable Speaker, Honourable Chairperson,

3. His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob will be remembered for, amongst other things, providing astute leadership at a time when our country needed it most. Under his leadership, the principles of Accountability and Transparency were entrenched into our Governance Architecture. Similarly, women and young people were appointed to senior leadership positions.

Due to his efforts, Namibia has achieved the highest female representation in Parliament at 50 percent and 41 percent in the Executive. Under difficult economic conditions, President Geingob strengthened Social Safety Nets.

4. He prioritised investment promotion on new sectors to propel our country towards Vision 2030. As a consequence, the new frontiers of Green Hydrogen, Green Industrialization as well as Oil and Gas further set the country firmly on the path of accelerated economic growth and shared prosperity.

5. President Geingob worked hard to maintain Peace, Stability and Unity, without which development cannot take place.

Sona President MbumbaSONA

Fellow Namibians,

6. During his inaugural State of the Nation address in 2015, President Geingob emphasized the strength of Namibia’s democratic architecture and the stability of the Namibian House. He sketched an analogy between Jesus’s parable of the wise and foolish builders in Matthew 7: 24-27 and the construction of the Namibian House. He concluded by stating, “In Namibia, we are not foolish. Wise leaders have built the Namibian House on solid rock.”

7. Owing to a robust Governance Architecture, we were able to prevail through a challenging transition after the passing of President Geingob, due in part to those of you seated here today as members of Parliament, who have continued building on the solid foundation established by the founders of the Namibian Constitution.

8. Taking this into consideration, I wish to seize this opportunity to salute my predecessors, His Excellency President Sam Nujoma, His Excellency President Hifikepunye Pohamba, His Excellency President Hage Geingob, as well as you Comrade Speaker and other historic Namibian leaders. Most importantly, I commend the Namibian people for their support in the face of unexpected sorrow, grief and challenges.

9. This year, Namibia will hold Presidential and National Assembly elections. I appeal to all political parties, their leaders and members to ensure that the elections are peaceful.

Honourable Speaker, Honourable Chairperson,

10. As we begin to pick ourselves up from the despair of the past several weeks, we face an expectant nation. From the old to the young, from every region, town and village, Namibians are looking to their Government for economic relief, prospects for job opportunities and to live in a country that is safe and secure. They hope that the development of oil and gas, and green hydrogen will transform our country into a haven of economic growth, employment and prosperity.

SONA1SONA 2

11. As a result of these promising trends, we expect the announcement of concrete results from the intensive offshore drilling programme. Furthermore, several uranium mines will re-commence operations. In addition, the construction of 3 green hydrogen pilot projects should be completed. Furthermore, the Walvis Bay container terminal concession should become effective, paving the way for increased investment and container traffic.

Statement by His Excellency Dr Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia, on the Occasion of the Official Opening of the 9th Session of the 7th Parliament, 6 February 2024, Windhoek

Ladies and Gentlemen, Good Afternoon.

I am honoured to join you at the official opening of the 9th Session of the 7th Parliament, in accordance with the longstanding practice established since independence.

The assumption of this legislative year is taking place at the time of the loss of our President, H.E Dr Hage G. Geingob on 4 February. He is one of the Founders of the Namibian Constitution, having chaired the Constituent Assembly which drafted our Constitution. He served, as the First Prime Minister and Third President of our Republic. Our country has therefore lost a national icon, a Hero, a committed and dedicated leader who did not only contribute to the building of the modern Namibian nation, but has made durable footprints in Namibia, the African continent and globally in all the spheres of human endeavour. May his soul rest in eternal peace. (Let us please observe a minute of silence).

As Namibians, we should therefore pick up from where he left and re-dedicate ourselves to the noble ideas of unity and inclusivity for all our citizens in the Namibian House.

Statement by His Excellency Dr Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia on the Occasion of the New Year 2024, Sunday, 31 December 2023

Fellow Namibians,

When I look back to the past 12 months, which have defined the Year of Revival, I am pleased with the giant steps we have made as Namibians towards our collective prosperity. We are on course in our ambition to leave Namibia in better shape, come March 2025. The foundations of the Namibian House have been strengthened. Namibia is on course for a sustainable economic revival.

Many Namibians will recall the difficulties we experienced over the past years, starting with a global commodity crisis in 2015, which led to protracted declines in Government revenue, affecting the implementation of the ambitious development and infrastructure manifesto the Government had planned to implement in the noble pursuit of prosperity for all.

Many Namibians will also recall that between 2016-2019, the country experienced the most severe droughts to be recorded in Namibian history, forcing Government to spend in excess of 3 billion Namibian Dollars on drought relief to the affected sectors of our population.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to convene this press conference to provide an account of the mission I recently led to the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting, in Davos Switzerland in May of this year.

I accepted an invitation forwarded to the Presidency from the Forum, to showcase Namibia’s innovative approach on its attempt to kick-start Namibia’s economic recovery by using its renewable energy potential to contribute to a global just energy transition. While there, the delegation made the most of the global platform to showcase our Country’s attractive investment destination and its peaceful and orderly environment.

My own agenda was full and started with a welcoming dinner on the evening of Monday the 23rd of May, which was attended by various Heads of State.

Tuesday kicked off with a session focusing on promoting intercontinental trade which was attended by Presidents from Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Malawi and also attended by the Vice President of Tanzania and the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast. This was followed by Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Session at the Namibia House which was fully booked, while many walking in and sitting on the stair cases and over 400 people online.
